Today is Earth Day

What is Earth Day and why should you care?

Earth Day was started in 1970 celebrating the modern movement of providing a voice to this emerging environmental consciousness, and putting environmental concerns on the front page. You can visit their website here

This year’s campaign focusses on Nature in the Race to Zero and how we need to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of the century to help control the rise in the global temperature.

As a company dedicated to making sustainable energy solutions work, the environment in which we operate is at the forefront of our minds. However, even we at Tewdric Energy know that not everything we do is as green as it could be so annual events like this give us the opportunity to concentrate on this important subject and learn from others.

Whilst we have an advantage of starting from a blank piece of paper rather than modifying an existing process (so no waste), here’s a few initiatives we’ve already implemented:

  • Our Staff communication policy - If it’s just 2 members of staff speaking (if remote) then this should be mobile to mobile. All long meetings, with several team members, will include large chunks of the meeting with cameras off to reduce energy consumption

  • Procurement - Only purchasing solar panels and inverters from Europe with the intention to move that closer to home.

  • Consciously choosing suppliers and equipment with sustainability in mind. For example, we’re looking at an electric forklift truck

  • Wherever possible we’re paperless - where necessary recycled or reusable - like our business cards

  • We have decided to use pencils and fountain pens rather than purchase new branded disposable pens

  • Staff work virtually to reduce the business’ carbon footprint and face to face meetings are programmed around other events to reduce unnecessary road use

Here’s some more we’re working on:

  • We’re taking on a run-down building and upcycling rather than a new or newly refurbished building which would have a far larger carbon footprint

  • Running a workshop on customer delivery and sustainable / reusable packaging

  • Collaborating with like-minded people and exploring ideas to become more sustainable

  • Implementing a system for measuring our current footprint

  • All new vehicles will be full electric - all existing fossil fuel based vehicles will be replaced by electric vehicles when no longer viable
