What can the Green Homes Wales loan pay for?

Through Tewdric Energy, the loan can fund four types of installation — individually or combined into a single application.

Solar PV panels
Rooftop solar systems for homes across South Wales and the South West, designed around your roof and energy use.
Battery storage
Home battery systems that store the electricity your panels generate, so you can use it in the evenings or when prices are high.
Solar + battery combined
The most popular choice — and often the most cost-effective use of the loan. One application, one installation, maximum savings.
EV charger
Smart home chargers that work seamlessly with your solar and battery system — available where linked to a solar installation.
Grant contributions may also be available on top of the loan for certain measures — your Retrofit Coordinator will confirm what applies to your specific project.

Remember: You need an installer that is:

1. Registered with TrustMark as an approved PAS 2030 installer; and

2. Certified with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) where the installation involves a low carbon technology such as solar panels.

To qualify, you need to meet all of the following:

  • You own and live in the property as your primary residence

  • The property is located in Wales

  • The property is not a new build (built within the last 6 months and not yet occupied)

  • The property is not a listed building or in a conservation area requiring special permissions

  • You can pass an affordability check and credit score assessment (the scheme is not means-tested)

Note for landlords Private landlords are not currently eligible for this scheme. If you are a landlord, contact Tewdric Energy to discuss alternative finance options for commercial and portfolio properties.

  • How do I apply?

How does the Green Homes Wales application process work?

The scheme follows a structured process. Here is what to expect, and where Tewdric Energy fits in:

    Register your interest
Visit the Development Bank of Wales website to register your interest. The team will send you an application form in line with current funding availability.

    Free Retrofit Coordinator assessment
A fully funded Retrofit Coordinator will carry out a detailed whole-home assessment. They produce a tailored report recommending the most effective improvements for your specific property. You are not committed to anything at this stage.

Get a quote from Tewdric Energy
Once you know which measures you want to proceed with, we can provide a detailed quote for your loan application. We visit your home rather than sending a generic quote. This lets us design a system that works for your roof, energy use and goals.

    Loan approval & installation
The Development Bank of Wales assesses your application, including affordability and credit checks. Once approved, we schedule and complete the installation. The loan is unsecured and your home is not used as security.

Six-month repayment holiday, then easy monthly payments
Repayments begin six months after installation giving your new system time to start reducing your energy bills before you pay a penny back on the loan.

  • Between £1,000 and £25,000, interest-free. For larger projects, extended terms may be available. Tewdric Energy can give you a detailed quote so you know exactly what you need to apply for.

  • It is primarily an interest-free loan, not a grant. You will need to repay it over up to 10 years, with a 6-month holiday at the start. Some measures may qualify for a small grant contribution on top of the loan — your Retrofit Coordinator will clarify this for your specific project.

  • Installers must comply with PAS 2035, the UK's retrofit quality standard. Tewdric Energy is RECC and NAPIT accredited and meets these requirements. Your Retrofit Coordinator can confirm approved installer requirements for your region.

  • Yes — and this is often the most cost-effective approach. A combined solar and battery system maximises self-consumption of the energy you generate, which improves your return and helps repay the loan faster through lower bills.

  • Yes. All applications are subject to an affordability check and credit score assessment. The scheme is not means-tested, so your income level is not the deciding factor — affordability of the monthly repayments is. The loan is unsecured, so your home is not at risk if circumstances change.

  • Potentially, yes. Retrofit battery storage is an eligible measure. Speak to Tewdric Energy and we can assess whether your existing system is compatible and help you prepare the quote for your application.

  • Yes if you have fully repaid your first loan, you can apply again for further measures.

  • In our experience the full process typically takes several weeks, depending on how quickly your Retrofit Coordinator assessment is scheduled and how long loan approval takes.

Tewdric Energy can usually complete the physical installation in a single day for a typical home solar and battery system.
